Visit a museum

Museums across the country will celebrate Museum Day 2009 with free admission Saturday.

Pow wow

Celebrate Ohio’s first residents at a native American pow wow 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Lorain County Metro Parks’ Vermilion River Reservation. The event will feature live professional dancers and drummers, costumes, food, craft vendors and more and will focus on the tribes native to Ohio. Learn how Ohio native Americans dressed, cooked and lived. Artifacts and information will be on display inside the Carriage Barn. Home tour

Main Street Vermilion holds a Hometown House Tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The tour begins at the Inland Seas Maritime Museum, which will have tickets and the brochure describing the five homes and live-aboard yacht. Tickets are $25. Click to read more. Nature day

Get close to nature Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lorain County Metro Parks’ Columbia Reservation. Learn about invasive plants, raptors, beavers, reptiles, amphibians and more, and take a hayride through the park. Enjoy food and miniature golf specials from Sundaes in the Park. Finally, meet Spartan, the park’s newest four-legged ranger. Info: www.loraincountymetroparks.com.

Community day

Carlisle Township holds its annual community day and car and bike show Sunday at the Carlisle Fire Department on state Route 301. The department’s ladies auxiliary will sell food. There will be activities for kids throughout the day and a 50/50 raffle, cornhole and a D.J. for adults. MetroHealth LifeFlight will make an appearance, and there will be a blood drive in memory of firefighter Ed Shepherd. Food fest

Sacred Heart Chapel is holding a Hispanic food fest 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church hall, 4107 Pearl Ave., Lorain. The menu is roast pork, tamales, tostados, tacos, rice and beans and dessert, and cost is $17. Info: Jose Ramirez, (440) 320-5531, or Joel Arredondo, (440) 371-2551.

Road rally

Leadership Lorain County kicks off its 25th anniversary celebration Friday with “The Race for Silver: The Ultimate Road Rally.” Teams of LLC alumni will be cruising Lorain County and visiting businesses, leaving “The Pits” tent at 12:30 pm and returning by 4:30. Visit “The Pits” in front of Lorain County Community College’s Spitzer Conference Center, to great the returning teams at 4:30. Music and food follow starting at 5. The competition continues at 5:30 with each of the teams presenting a cheer, which will be judged by Jon Loufman, meteorologist from Channel 19. Loufman will also crown Leadership Lorain County’s king and queen to reign over the festivities.

Steak fries

  • Main Street Elyria will host a steak fry 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Ely Square. Tickets cost $25 which includes dinner, music by the band Road Runner and dancing. There will be a cash bar. Rain Venue is St. Mary Church, 320 Middle Ave. Info: Main Street Elyria, (440) 322-5000.
  • The Lorain Downtown Christmas Decorating Council is holding a steak fry to raise money for downtown Lorain holiday decorating. The steak fry costs $15 per person and is 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the United Polish Club, West 17th Street and Long Avenue, Lorain. Info: Janet or Pat, (440) 244-5100.

Pancake breakfast

Get all-you-can-eat pancakes 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Lorain County Metro Parks’ Carlisle Visitor Center. Cost is $6.50 for adults, $4 for kids 3 to 10 and free for kids 2 and under.

Walk-N-Talk

Join the Lorain Cooperative Ministry, a coalition of nine downtown churches, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday as they walk, talk and raise money for their ministry, a large part of which is feeding Lorain’s hungry. The walk, at Black River Landing in Lorain, has no set distance or donation amount. Water and snacks will be provided. Info: www.loraincoopministry.com.

Theater
