Celebrate the sunset
Lakeview Park’s Sunset Festival, which began in 1982 and returned last year after a hiatus, is noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. Celebrate the park’s rich history of community, culture and beautiful sun-sets with musical entertainment, children’s activities and performances all day. Artists, crafters and community groups will have items on display. Sunset (8:45 p.m.) will be marked with a butter-fly release, and the Black River Astronomical Society will have telescopes for stargazing after dark. Duck Dash
Thousands of ducks will race down the Vermilion River for the Duck Dash 500 at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Sponsor a duck for $5 or get a “quack pack” of six for $25. Watch from the Vermilion River bridge or McGarvey’s Landing as the ducks are dumped and race to the finish line. First place win-ner is $1,000, second place is $500, and third place is $250. “Adopt” a duck by visiting McGarvey’s Landing on Saturday, stopping in a downtown Vermilion merchants or calling (440) 967-7087. Vermilion triathlon
The second-annual Vermilion Harbor Triathlon starts at 8 a.m. Sunday at Linwood Park. Ath-letes have the choice of either sprint or Olympic distances and either duathlon (run-bike-run) or triathlon (swim-bike-run) and can participate individually or as a team. Costs range from $55 to $105 and include a pasta dinner the day before. There is no race-day registration, so the last chance to register is noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Linwood Park. Do the Right Thing
The Lorain Police Department’s back-to-school festival is 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Black River Landing. Enjoy food, fun, entertainment, free school supplies, activities and games. Info: (440) 204-2103.
Car shows
- Welcome Nursing Home will have a car cruise-in 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at its Hamilton Street parking lot, 417 S. Main St., Oberlin. There will be a disc jockey, burgers and a bake sale. - A classic car show and summer concert with the Geezecats is noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Del Webb’s Pioneer Ridge, 9479 Saw Mill Drive. Space is limited, and registrations are being taken now. $10 entry fee includes a T-shirt, dash plaque and raffle ticket. Proceeds benefit community charities of the North Ridgeville Fire Department. - New Life Hospice’s 20th annual steak fry is 6 to 11 p.m. Friday at DeLuca’s Place in the Park, Lorain. Cost is $22 for adults, which includes steak, baked potato, salad, dessert and beverage. Kids can eat a hot dog meal for $5. The Naked Monkeys will perform.
